Approximately 120 people belong to the Presbyterian Church in Leonia. These members travel
from many neighboring communities to worship together, sharing faith, commitment and a
willingness to go into the world with understanding and mission.
You do not have to be a Presbyterian to be a member
of the Presbyterian Church in Leonia. We
welcome all seekers and Christians who are willing to confess Jesus as Lord and seek to
follow in his ways, regardless of cultural or denominational background, age, gender,
sexual orientation or economic circumstance. Membership
classes (and baptism classes for those who have not been baptized in a recognized
Christian Church) are held once or twice a year, depending on need and interest. Year long confirmation and commissioning classes
are held for teenagers approximately every other year.
All members are entitled to pastoral care and have the responsibility to
vote in elections.
You do not have to be a member to participate
in the life and mission of our church. Many members and friends are active on
various committees and projects that strengthen our life as a congregation and our
outreach in mission.
We elect 12 women and men to govern the church
through the Session, and another 9 women and men to serve a Board of Deacons, who provide
pastoral support for persons who are homebound, sick, hospitalized or are in need of
special care.
The congregation is a member of the Presbytery
of the Palisades, which extends throughout Bergen, Hudson and part of Passaic
Counties. We are part of the Synod of the Northeast and the General Assembly of the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), which is a member communion of the World and National
Councils of Churches.
